Snowfall record shattered

With four days left to go in the month, Tahoe has already broken the record for December snowfall set 50 years ago

The Central Sierra Snow Lab at Soda Springs has recorded roughly 200 inches of snow in December– more than 16 feet– shattering the 1970 December record of 179 inches.

The enormous snowfall led to multi-day closures of Interstate 80. Caltrans reports westbound I-80 remains closed at the Nevada state line, but eastbound lanes have reopened with chain controls.

The record-setting snowfall has also created a challenge for Mark Etcheberry, the Incline Pines snow removal contractor. But as of Tuesday evening, it looks like Mark’s making progress on the road and parking spaces. We’re not sure how soon IPM can get to the walkways– please call them directly for updates ‭(775) 298-7956‬.

In the wake of the heavy snowfall, we must now brace for dropping temperatures; 7° by Friday night in Incline Village. For those not up at the lake, hopefully you’ve got a thermostat that will keep your interior temperature well above freezing. It’s also a good idea to shut off your water when you’re not there. Frozen pipes can be disastrous!

Here’s a summary from the National Weather Service in Reno:

Even colder air will arrive for the end of the week into the New Year’s weekend, with frigid temperatures most likely Saturday and Sunday mornings. These could be the coldest nights in nearly five years for many areas, with lows in the single digits for much of western Nevada and well below zero in Sierra communities.

The recent series of storms has created multiple issues for those already up at Incline Pines. HOA board president Heidi Burton sent out this message on Tuesday:
