Curious young bears visit Incline Pines

A couple of juvenile black bears have been spotted in recent weeks prowling Incline Pines after dark.

Jeff Unverferth, Unit 6, provided video from his Ring camera along with the following message:

The two juvenile bears visited us a few times over the course of a few weeks back in December. One is black and one is tan. They are back and active once again. They got into the trash at Unit 23 today (March 9). They were also seen in a bear box on Cristina this afternoon.

They also know how to open car doors. I ran them off in December opening car doors on Incline Pines road.

It’s a good time to refresh the community about bears and guidance on reducing bear activity in the community. We don’t want these guys getting comfortable. If they score free food here they will be here all the time and it can get ugly.

    Thanks for sharing!
As a community it is important to keep our bear boxes secure. Make sure both the top and bottom latch and that the door is completely closed. If you are having trouble with your bear box please let the board know so that we can get it fixed.

Also these bears can open car doors and will entertain your car in pursuit of yummy smelling things. Food, gum, lotion, soda, or anything else that smells like calories to them. While searching your car for yummy smells they can do extensive damage to your vehicle. Lock your doors and keep yummy smells secure.

Bears who find reliable food sources in communities can become real problems for homeowners. We want to discourage bears from getting food and becoming comfortable at Incline Pines.

Please secure your trash and don’t temp bears with yummy smells. It’s really not good that these young bears have already become so comfortable in the community. Let’s all do our part to make sure Incline pines does not become a regular food source for them.
