Bear Box Break-in and Dumpster Abuse

The Incline Pines Homeowners Association spends a substantial amount of your money to keep our community tidy. Sometimes it feels like a losing battle.

Bear box break-in

When you deposit trash in your unit’s bear box, please make sure the doors are fully closed and latched. This may require a gentle nudge with your toes at the bottom of the locking door because some of the springs are worn and some of the doors are bent– and the claw marks are as good as fingerprints in helping us to identify the suspects.

Of course bears are just doing what bears do. They are smart and surprisingly agile and if they get a free meal at Incline Pines, well– that’s on us.

Dumpster abuse

The dumpsters are a different story. Everyone in the neighborhood is pretty good about latching the lids to keep bears out. But that doesn’t stop some humans from abusing our very expensive community resource.

Twice this month our Dumpster Cam® captured images of people using our dumpsters improperly. One case appears to be a misunderstanding by a new resident about what is and isn’t allowed in our dumpsters.

The other case is an egregious example of illegal dumping. On July 10, two men in a white Ford pickup truck with California license plates 56781D3 filled our two dumpsters with debris– and when the trash dumpster was full they dumped non-recyclable material into the recycling bin.

Two men caught on camera July 10, 2023 illegally dumping debris in the Incline Pines dumpsters

They left a set of wheels outside one of the dumpsters and placed a set of golf clubs behind it. HOA Board treasurer Renee Meldrum discovered the golf clubs (that had been sitting there for two weeks) and took them down to a thrift store.

This was no misunderstanding. The men talked about what they were doing and concealed their activity when vehicles passed by. The HOA has filed a criminal (misdemeanor) complaint with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and if anyone know who these two men are, we would consider dropping the complaint if they would pay restitution. This kind of behavior is costing us a lot of money.

For the record, the dumpsters are for the use of residents for their domestic trash. They are not for construction debris, old appliances, junk from your closets or stuff you’ve brought up from your “other” home.

Incline Property Management is now dumping bear box trash in the dumpsters to save on a separate trip to Waste Management, so the dumpsters are really getting a workout.

You’ll need a key for the dumpsters

It’s convenient, of course, not to have to carry another key and struggle with a shackle lock. Unfortunately, despite our efforts to discourage dumpster abuse with prominent signs and a solar-powered camera, the Board has decided to order locks for the two dumpsters which will require the same key homeowners were previously issued. If you need a replacement, please contact IPM.
